The process of storing carbon in geological formations underground is termed as geological sequestration. The geological formations identified are unmineable coal seams, saline aquifers, and depleted oil and gas fields.  Research is underway to find out the consequence of storing carbon in underground aquifers to make it a commercially viable option.
