Clathrate Gun Hypothesis - Definition, glossary, details
The Clathrate gun hypothesis suggests that the release of methane
from methane clathrate found in the ocean floor is responsible for global
warming. This is based on the presumption that increase in sea temperature can
trigger sudden release of methane from methane clathrate. There is stronger
evidence that the methane clathrate breakdown may have caused drastic
alteration to the ocean environment and the earth’s atmosphere in number of
occasions in the geological past.
